St. Lucia is the sort of island that travellers to the Caribbean dream about - a small, lush tropical gem that is still relatively unknown. One of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, it is located midway down the Eastern Caribbean chain, between Martinique and St. Vincent, and north of Barbados. Stretching sandy beaches, a warm balmy climate, tropical vegetation and delicious fresh local produce make St. Lucia an absolutely idyllic Caribbean escape.
Climate
St Lucia enjoys a hot, tropical climate tempered by trade winds throughout most of the year. The driest period is from December to May - idyllic for those Caribbean winter getaways - and there is increased rainfall in summer and towards the end of the year (June to November).
Tourism
Tourism is vital to St. Lucia's economy and the economic importance of such is expected to continue to increase as the market for bananas becomes more competitive. Tourism tends to be more substantial during the dry season (January to April). St Lucia tends to be popular due to its tropical weather and scenery and its large number of beaches and resorts.
Location & Getting There
The island is easily accessible from the UK and worldwide and enjoys two main airports, George FL Charles Airport (SLU), near Castries and Hewanorra International (UVF), which is near Vieux Fort.
George FL Charles Airport is closer to many of the all-inclusive resorts, has a modest terminal and runway able to easily support inter-island commercial flights. Hewanorra is a larger airport, but can be an 1 hour by taxi from most of the major resorts in the North.
Those who want to turn their travel into their vacation can also choose a sea-based route. Cruises can be a great deal of fun, and can enter at a few ports around the island. Cruises will allow travellers brief stops at locations around the island, but will also stop at plenty of other Caribbean islands along the way.
Airlines who have a service to St. Lucia are American Airlines, US Airways, Air Jamaica, BWIA, Air Canada, Delta Air Lines, American Eagle, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, LIAT and Caribbean Star.
Food & Drink
St Lucian food consists mainly of fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and a variety of curry, jerk, rice and stewed dishes. The coal pot is a delicious stew, traditional to native Caribbean cultures and can be found at many local restaurants in Castries, Soufriere and Vieux-Fort.
St. Lucia has fantastic Rum Punch with other infamous drinks including Chairman's Reserve (cask-aged dark rum) and Crystal Lime (clear rum infused with lime). In addition to superb rum, Piton Lager beer is brewed and bottled on the island.
